Q&A with the Photographer Herself!

Wedding Advice

Welcome back, lovers of love!

In our last blog, we hinted at how jam-packed this past summer has been, and spent a little time appreciating the transition from wedding season to autumn. (Here it is, in case you missed it!)

That’s something we’ve been doing a lot of lately: taking a little time for appreciation. With styled shoots, wedding editorials, and good, old-fashioned weddings (blessedly) eating up most of our time, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of it all. So to counteract the fast-paced nature of our world, we turn to social media!

Which, yes, might seem counterintuitive, but for all social media’s complexities there’s one simple feature that makes it all worth it: connection

So whether Shayla is out on the road somewhere in between New Mexico and Colorado, or capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments, you can follow along as we take little moments to appreciate and reflect on the creative work.

And one of our very favorite ways to show appreciation and make connections is by chatting with our followers on Instagram! (We’re kind of like a little family, in case you wanted to join.)

But if you’re not on the gram, or are ultra concerned about your following-to-follower ratio, no worries. We’ve got the scoop here for you, too! Keep scrolling for a live Q&A with the creative figurehead of this little wedding photography business, Shayla Cristine — you’ll get the skinny on everything our followers wanted to know: her favorite weddings, what her calendar looks like, and more. Let’s dive in!

What’s your favorite part of a wedding to shoot?

I love the intimate portraits when it’s just the couple and us! It’s so fun to connect and laugh and enjoy that time together.

What sets you apart from others?

Great question! My combination of style, personality, and vision for each and every couple is bespoke from start to finish. I create a one-of-a-kind experience for couples that cannot be replicated — and we have tons of fun, of course!

(One thing about Shayla that’s super obvious as an outsider? She’s like a ray of sunshine — bubbly, hilarious, and an expert at making everyone she meets feel like they’re best friends. That’s why all her couples look so cozy and natural!)

Do you do maternity photos?

YES.

Is your calendar filling now that the state is reopening?

Yes and no…I think couples here in New Mexico have been waiting for ALL the restrictions to be lifted before booking their weddings. Which is smart, but we’re really excited to get back to shooting more! This summer, specifically July, is pretty packed though, so we’re still in for some fun.

(So good news and bad news: this summer filled up QUICK. But since couples are waiting to book their wedding vendors, you still have some time to sneak in your engagement shoot, wedding editorial, or, yes, maternity session!)

Any secrets to look better in photos?

Ha! We all have this problem! Really, the secret is it’s all about pretty lighting and good angles.

(Which is why you should always shoot for a wedding photographer with tons of experience in different settings. Have we mentioned that Shayla has been shooting weddings all across the southwest and abroad for over 10 years?!)

What wedding was the most fun to shoot?!

Gosh! I can’t really pinpoint just ONE wedding. Every wedding is always so much fun and filled with love!

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?!

Another great question! Since COVID hit, I’ve had a huge awakening in both my personal and professional life! I am, in a way, starting over and completely restructuring my business which will take a lot of time and entail a LOT of changes.

So where do I see myself in 5 years? Well, I’ll definitely be shooting weddings, capturing love stories, and connecting with couples — just on another continent!
